Surrey Street market

Why are we doing this?

Great news! due to popular demand, Surrey Street Sunday market will be re-launched in September. The aim of the Sunday market is to bring local residents and visitors something different to the current weekly market, with artisan goods, street food, vintage goods, art and events.

Please complete our short survey and give us our views on what you would like to see and experience at the Sunday market.

Survey closes 3 September 2017.

What do we want to know?

Your views on what you would like to see and experience at the Sunday market.

What we found out

Results of the survey:

  • 189 responses to survey, of which 101 (61%) were from respondents living in the town centre (CR0 post code)
  • 68 respondents (36%) visit Croydon Town Centre every Sunday, the primary reason being shopping (75%)
  • 80 respondents (43%) visit Surrey Street Market at least once a week, with 125 respondents (68%) visiting at least once a month
  • There was significant support for the vision of goods sold -  the top three were street food (102 respondents; 57%), artisan bread (100 respondents; 56%) and vintage goods (72 respondents; 40%).
  • Other goods people would like to see on the market include plants and flowers (we already have a trader selling these), crafts and handmade gifts (we already have a trader selling handmade notebooks which are perfect for gifts as well as another trader selling jewellery) and clothing (one of the weekday traders trades clothes and fashion accessories at the Sunday market).
  • Food and drink festivals was the most popular event residents would like to see at the Sunday market (118 respondents; 66%), followed by themed markets (98 respondents; 55%) and outdoor performances and exhibitions (78 (44%) and 79 (44%) respondents, respectively).
  • Other events residents would like to see are children’s activities (we have Human Zoo doing a series of Theatre on the Market performances between now and Christmas), music (we had music/singers for Little Canada and Beats and Eats will be doing a couple of weeks with live music) and religious and cultural events (we will be having a Diwali event next month)
What difference has it made?

The survey has provided evidence to support the Council’s vision for Surrey Street Sunday Market and it has informed future types of market traders/events that residents would like to see.  We now know who to attract/what events to host at the Sunday market going forward.
