Why are we doing this?

This survey is being undertaken to support a review of Croydon's health visiting service.

We would like to know about your experiences of Croydon’s health visiting service so that we can improve and develop the services we offer. 

If you have received the survey by email it is because you are registered with our Best Start Services in Croydon and we understand you have one or more children under the age of five.

We would very much appreciate it if you could take five minutes to complete the attached short survey about your experiences of the health visiting services in Croydon. The responses are anonymous and we cannot identify anyone from the answers.

Health visitors are the staff who see mothers and babies / children up to the age of 5. Someone from the health visiting team will usually visit you at home in the first two weeks after your baby is born.  You may also have seen them shortly before your baby was born.  The health visiting team will then often see you and your child, at home or in a clinic, until your child is four years old.

Your feedback would be invaluable to us in understanding how the service is supporting parents in Croydon.  We will let you know the results of the survey in the new year by sending you an email about our findings.

What do we want to know?

The aim of the survey is to provide information about your experiences of the Health Visiting services in Croydon.

What we found out

Number of respondents

  • 1320 people accessed the survey
  • 980 people completed all questions including the demographic questions

Overall care

Respondents were asked how they would rate the quality of the care they had received from the health visiting service. This is reported in total but also by the age of the child of the person completing the survey and when they had last seen the health visiting team to identify whether there was a difference in the responses in the levels of satisfaction.

  • Overall approximately 60% of respondents thought the service they had received was good or better, 40% thought it was fair or poor.
  • Clients with younger babies were more positive about the services, 71% said they were excellent, very good and good, compared with the 53% of parents of 1 to 2 year olds
  • The level of satisfaction was also in direct relationship to the amount of contact. 72% of people who had seen their health visitor within the last three months thought the services was good or better, compared to 41% who had not seen the health visiting team for between 1 and 2 years

Feedback about specific areas of support

Respondents were asked whether they had discussed subjects such as breastfeeding, oral health, managing minor illnesses with their health visitor and whether this had been helpful. They were also asked if they had not discussed a subject, whether they would have liked to.

More than 950 people answered this particular groups of questions. The feedback provides useful insights as to what aspects of support the health visiting service and the wider Best Start community and other partners could focus its future efforts on.

The three areas which the most people report they had not discussed but would have liked to were:

  • How to manage your child’s minor illnesses (265 respondents)
  • Support for you as a parent (234 respondents)
  • Looking after your child’s teeth and gums (226 respondents)

The three areas which the most people had discussed and had found very or quite helpful were:

  • Breastfeeding (490 respondents)
  • Immunisations and vaccinations for your child (485 respondents)
  • Weaning / starting your child on solid food (363 respondents)

 

 

What difference has it made?

The feedback from parents has been invaluable in informing our understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the health visiting service and it is being used to inform future  service plans.

  • It highlighted how important 1 and 2 year checks are for parents. Parents reported that their children had not had these checks. Ut is very positive that all parents in Croydon are now being offered the opportunity to make an appointment for a 1 and 2 year check.
  • The survey also highlighted specific areas of support that parents said they would have liked to have discussed with the health visiting team. This feedback is being used to inform future development plans for the services.
