Changes to the 'sibling' definition

Please tell us whether you support/do not support the proposal to bring further clarification to the ‘sibling’ definition (Criterion 2 – Note 3)

Note 3: A sibling is defined as a brother or sister, half-brother or sister, stepbrother or stepsister, foster-brother or sister or legally adopted brother or sister who is part of the same family unit, living in the same family household and at the same address as the child for whom the school place application is being made. For the avoidance of doubt, a child of a friend or extended family member (for example, a cousin) living at the same address will not be considered as a ‘sibling’ for the purpose of this policy.

For applications made in the normal admission round, eligibility for sibling priority will apply at the date of application, in any year group excluding the final year (Year 6).

In the case of in-year applications, children with siblings allocated a place in the Reception or Year 3 class at a linked junior school to start in September will be eligible for priority under the sibling criterion from 1 August each year when this local authority opens waiting lists for the new academic year.

This criterion does not include siblings on the roll of the school’s nursery class, if it has one.
